A company based in Manchester has become the leader in its field after posting excellent profits.

Shred-it Manchester, which offers document destruction services for businesses, said sales had increased by £3.1 million between January and July, a 22 per cent increase on the same six months in 2008, the Manchester Evening News reports.

This was partly attributed to a new three-year contract win with the NHS, as well as firms being more careful with sensitive data.

Operations manager Neil Percy commented: "The Manchester operating business is playing a key role in driving the growth of Shred-it across the UK as a whole."

He also claimed that the Manchester branch is achieving a higher turnover than any of its competitors in the whole of the UK.

Back in July 2008, research carried out by privacy think tank the Ponemon Institute found that 61 per cent of marketing staff admit to having lost confidential data belonging to their customers at least once within the past two years.
