Community shred events

Birmingham Community Shred® Event, 2009

Shred-it organised a special community shredding event at the Leukemia Research 5 and 10km Charity Run at Bromsgrove Rugby Club, between 11am and 1pm on Sunday 17th May 2009. The event offered local residents the opportunity to have their unwanted confidential documents destroyed on site, free of charge.

The event was held to promote public awareness within the community about identity theft and fraud prevention. By shredding their personal information, individuals that participated in the day’s community shredding event took real steps towards protecting themselves against the threat of identity theft.

Scotland Community Shred® Event, 2009

Shred-it East of Scotland, based in Cowdenbeath, in partnership with Fife Constabulary, hosted Scotland’s first ever community shred event on 30th May 2009, at Fife Leisure Park, Dunfermline. The event gave the local community a chance to come along and have their documents shredded on site for a suggested donation of £1 per bag or £3 per box.

Fife Constabulary was available on the day to offer tips and advice on how to protect yourself from the threat of identity theft.

Charity partners Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) and the 3rd Fife (RBL) Scout Group were also present on the day. All proceeds from the event were split between the two organisations.

Identity Theft Awareness

Identity theft is one of the UK’s fastest growing crimes. According to the UK’s fraud prevention service CIFAS, one in 10 people have already been a victim of identity fraud. To protect yourself against identity theft, make sure that all your confidential documents are regularly shredded or securely stored. Never dispose of personal materials in non-secure places where there is the chance that they could be stolen, such as rubbish or recycling bin.

Check out our Identity Theft Fact Sheet for more tips and advice on how to guard against identity theft.
